What is Wooden Spoon?
As the Children’s Charity of Rugby, Wooden Spoon harnesses the spirit and values of rugby to give disadvantaged children and young people in the UK and Ireland a chance to achieve their full potential in life.
In the UK, one child in every hundred suffers from a lifelong disability that will profoundly affect his or her ability to lead a full and happy life. More than 3.5 million young people grow up in low income households or live in an environment where they are subjected to poverty of aspiration. At Wooden Spoon, we believe that all children and young people deserve the chance to live happy fulfilled lives regardless of the challenges they may face. Spoon harnesses the spirit and values of rugby to give disadvantaged children and young people in the UK and Ireland a chance to achieve their full potential in life.
We partner with the UK rugby community, receiving invaluable support for our activities and the opportunity to raise awareness of the work we do. In doing so, we involve some of the UK’s top sporting role models in a making difference in the lives of young people in need. During our first 26 years, over half a million young people benefitted from more than £16 million pounds of investment in charitable projects thanks to the efforts of our staff and volunteers. We are proud of our legacy, the work we do, and our ambitious plans for the future.
‘Wooden Spoon is delighted to be involved with the inaugural GSL Academy Awards event. Good luck to everyone who is the running to win an award and many thanks once again for supporting Wooden Spoon.’ Jason Leonard OBE (Lead Ambassador, Wooden Spoon)

The Academy of Securities Lending
We are inviting key individuals from all participants in securities lending to join an Academy of Securities Lending to oversee and guide the awards process.
The members of the academy will be drawn from traders, lenders, borrowers, hedge funds, beneficial owners, technology and service providers. The number of Academicians will be limited to 100 members who will be asked to assess submissions from entrants in each award category and to recommend a shortlist. Market knowledge is a vital backdrop to these assessments as well as the academy invitations. The awards process will provide an environment where the industry chooses and recognises those firms which, in its collective opinion, are true and widely acknowledged industry leaders.
The awards will be overseen by a judging panel which will be chaired by Roy Zimmerhansl Editor-in-Chief of GSL and GSL.tv. Members of this panel will be announced from late January 2010. Online entries will open in January 2010 on GSL.tv.
Entries will be accepted in 23 categories grouped into Best Trading Capability, Best Operations, Best Global Market Knowledge, Overall Awards and Looking to the Future. Academicians will select which groupings they are best qualified to assess. These groupings will also enable academicians in firms to gather information and feedback internally.
In addition to those firms that put themselves forward in the award categories, Members of the Academy may also propose entrants in each category including their own firm. There are no prizes for being shy - the objective is to identify the top performers in each category. Invitees and their firms may propose alternative academicians if appropriate.
